from the horse's side.
All bags include very heavy-duty snaps so
when they bang against a tree in cold weather, they won't break!
Seams are reinforced heavily on back side to prevent
seam rip outs.
All bags include an extra inner pouch into which one
inch of closed cell foam pad is inserted. This helps prevent "soring" a
horse!
Western Saddle Pannier or Flop Over
Pannier You may have to walk into
camp leading your horse, but once your camp gear is unloaded you have a
saddle horse to ride. This is for the recreational packer who, like me, is
short on horse power. This set of very heavy duty bags "flops over" a
western saddle, decker, or sawbuck. They are built the same way our
previous set of alforjas bags are built except we sew 10,000 lb webbing
in the high stress, rip out area across the top (pommel and cantle).
A "flop-over" pannier (see below) saves one from purchasing a pack
saddle!
Beginning packers will often ask us "why are these
pack bags built so heavy duty?"
I
started packing with the "cheap stuff" 30 years ago. I soon learned that
when you load 90lbs of gear in each side bag and they jog up and down
and sideways a thousand times a day the seams always rip out. This ruins
a pack trip! If you invest in quality gear you will save yourself a
hundred headaches!

Right bag has small interior elastic pouches for
smaller tools. (See photos on "cantle bag" site.)
Left bag has
larger elastic interior loop pouches for binoculars, range finders,
first aid kits, etc. These Elastic pouches keep your "stuff" from
banging around inside the saddle bag.
Webbing with camlock
buckles allows for cinching down raincoats, tents, coveralls, etc. These
"cinch down" straps can be removed with scissor snaps on both ends.

Our latest improvement has elastic pouches on top of
each bag for water bottles, cameras, etc. We have now replaced all
plastic snaps on both the saddle bag and cantle bag with metal
snap/buckles. (Exactly as shown, but metal - not plastic). When your
saddle bag hits a tree in cold weather the plastic snaps will
disintegrate. You will eventually be glad we used 30oz Ironcloth™
from which the saddle bag is manufactured because a sharp stick along
side the trail will eventually jab your saddle bag. If the bag is made
of cordura, ballistic cloth, or heaby canvas the sharp stick will
definitely rip the side out of your saddle bag. Thirty ounce Ironcloth™
is virtually bullet proof! As with all Ironcloth™
products, this saddle bag will last a lifetime!
Rifle Scabbards or Saddle Scabbards
Ever wonder why your gun gets rusty on a hunting
trip? Part of the reason is because most scabbards are lined with closed
cell foam. This is good for padding a scope, but closed cell foam is not
breathable, thus your gun sweats and gets rusty. Whether it's a human
being in a tent or a rifle in a scabbard, the fabric must be breathable!
We manufacture our rifle scabbards using the following four layers:
The four scabbards on the left are standard scoped
models - made with extra room so when you need to pull your gun out
fast, there is no hang up. The four scabbards on the right are "bipod"
models. We also manufacture a model for "lever action" guns and a model
for extended length barrels.
The photo to the left shows the same 8 scabbards as
in the photo above, but after the lights are out. This allows a hunter
the chance to find his horse after dark with only a pen light.

If your tired of your rifle coming home rusty, we've got the solution
for you. Because we don't use closed cell foam, like most other
manufacturers, our scabbards breathe. Closed cell foam is
non-breathable, thus a wet rifle sweats and cannot dry itself out.
Your scope will also get foggy if the scabbard is made with closed cell
foam. With our 4-layer water-proof / breathable manufacturing
process, your rifle cannot get wet from horse sweat or rain, yet it
allows a wet gun to dry out. The rear attachment strap is
longer than the front strap allowing the lower end (barrel end) of the
scabbard to hang lower as shown in the photo A above. Photo B
shows a reverse attachment for another carry option (reverse scabbard).
This scabbard is designed around my 300 magnum with a 50mm scope and a
"tear drop" see through mounting ring, so I can also see my open sights
should the scope fog up. This means that there is about one inch
more width built in the scabbard than it appears. When you need to
bust open the velcro overflap and pull your rifle out fast - it comes
out easily. It does not bind up!

Cantle Bags
These larger volume bags fit behind your cantle (back
of saddle). I suppose a stupid person could overload a horse, but the
bag directly behind the cantle is meant for sleeping bags, coveralls,
coats, etc. Twenty years ago I made this mistake of placing a set of
binoculars in this bag. (Very Dumb!) The binoculars jarred up and down a
thousand times a day until I sored the horse. Well, I won't do that
again, but someone else will. That's why we sew not only fleece, but a
layer of felt both on the bottom and sides (see photo below).
Set of 3 extra cam-lock straps allow packer to slip
coats, coveralls, tents, etc. underneath. One can pack in an entire
spike camp and still ride your horse.

The left bag includes larger elastic constraints for
such items as binoculars, range finders and first aid kits. The right
bag utilizes smaller elastic holders for hoof picks, flashlights,
leather punches, etc. This system keeps your "stuff" from banging
against itself. (Might just save a flashlight bulb!)

This cantle bag is designed "low profile" so one can
easily swing his or her leg over in mounting or dismounting your horse,
yet the bag is large enough to hold a large sleeping bag! The plastic
snaps shown in this photo have now been replaced with metal snaps so
they won't break when the side bag hits a tree in cold weather. The
Ironcloth™
from which the cantle bag is manufactured will not rip, as will Cordura,
when jabbed with a sharp stick along side the trail!
Just attach or release the cantle bag with the
scissor snaps.
